A. When a river reduces its sinuosity, it is often "abandoning" its former channel by cutting more directly across a point bar and abandoning a former meander. Abandonment can also take place when a river is not actually reducing its sinuosity (which would be a response to a decrease in base level) but can take place when a meander has reached a maximum amplitude and a temporary increase in the energy level of the river allows it to cut across a meander. This is a natural response of rivers that meander across wide flood plains. Meandering has no real context that indicates either an increase or decrease in sinuosity. It simply describes a sinuous path of some degree. A good reference on river channel morphology: Also see my answer… [cont.]
