What kind of books did your parents have when you were a child?
Q. What kind of books did your parents have in your house as you were growing up? Not books for you, but books for them... See, as i was growing up my parents had books on the theory of alien civilizations & extraterrestrial research, amongst other things such as psychology books & books on unexplained phenomenons. Today I am very interested in these things, especially the alien stuff. As my mum was growing up her mum had a lot of books about the workings of the brain & a lot of encyclopedias & today she is very stuff like that. From this i saw a pattern. How about you? Do your current interests stem from the books you grew up around as a child?

What is the future of books? What would a bookless future hold for generations to come?
Q. With advances in technology, electronic books and audio books are gaining popularity. But these do not offer the 'feel' of curling up with a good book. They also limit the audience to only those that have acess to a computer/internet. Can traditional books and the world of computer text live in harmony and coincide with each other? Will books become obsolete? What would a bookless future hold for generations to come? Thank you in advance!
Asked by Nicole - Sun Dec 2 19:26:36 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, the book has been around about 500 years, so I doubt it is going anywhere. Audio would seem to be the way to go, but there is a problem. There is something you can do with a book or screen that you can't do with sound...skim. When we read, we can glance over words pretty quickly. Taht is why it deosn't raelly mtater how bad yuor seplinlg is. Your brain can just quickly scan a pile of letters and make sense of them. This allows you to just skim over a book until to find the relavent information. That is something you can't do with an audio file. I think that one day there will be an 'electric book', like the one amazon is trying to sell, but reading isn't going anywhere. Joe

A. You should look into the author Ann Rinaldi, she writes excellent historical fiction for young readers both at the middle school and high school level and her books cover all the major events in history. Here are a couple: The Secret of Sarah Revere (Revolutionary War) An Acquaintance with Darkness (Civil War) A Break with Charity- (Salem Witch Trials) And she has many others. Excellent writer and she is used by a lot of classroom teachers although apparently not yours.

How do coupon books like Entertainment work?
Q. I see these books for sale by schools as fundraisers. I'm wondering how does the Entertainment company make it's money.Do companies pay to get their coupon in the book? Does all the revenue come from the sale of the book? Or both? I'm planning on doing something similar for my organization, but I don't know if I should charge businesses a fee to offer coupons in my book.
Asked by Mic B - Wed Aug 20 14:16:51 2008 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. It works the same way newspaper advertising works. Both parties, the advertisers and the readers pay. The advertisers pay the lions share of newspaper production, the 25 or 50 cents you pay for your daily newspaper would not keep them in business very long. Your book should work the same way. Businesses pay to have their business advertised in the book. The coupon is what is called a "loss leader". The business will take a loss on the initial transaction (discount associated with the coupon) in hopes of generating new business (in hopes that the new customers will come back a 2nd and 3rd time). The cost to the consumer is nominal and covers the a small portion of the production and delivery costs. The enticement of the sale is that… [cont.]

How many books should a fantasy book series have?
Q. I am 13 and trying to write a fantasy series (because i greatly admire J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer) and i am almost finished with my first book. I was wondering how many words it should end up with and how many books should follow it. Help?
Asked by IvyStar13 - Mon May 3 10:05:12 2010 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A series should have as many books as are necessary to tell the story, and no more. Novels for adults average around 100,000 words, but fantasy can be a bit longer. Novels for teenagers are shorter - around 60,000 words, I think. Tarzan and the Eternal Champion both have a lot of books in the series, but they don't tell one single continuing story - you can read some of the later books without needing to read all the earlier ones first.

What are good books to have my middle school students read?
Q. I am a first year teacher and teach a variety of different classes. I need some help when it comes to my lit classes. What are good books that I can potentially get to have my 7th and 8th grade students read? I'm from a very small school district and have been using what I have, but it isn't much! Most of the books are falling apart and/or I don't have enough copies! If there are any teachers out there that could recommend some books for these grade levels I would be VERY grateful!

What are some books you could recommend to a 15 year old starter?
Q. I'm an aspiring writer but my mentor said that reading can really widen my vocabulary, so I just want to know some good books out there for teens, of course with a fine writing style. I've finished Twilight a week ago but sadly, I wasn't satisfied with the writing style. Please recommend me a book, also with the name of the author and if possible, include a brief summary about the book. Thanks in advance.

A. You can save money by buying books online but you must be sure you're buying the right book...I go online to the school bookstore and look at the books for that class. But if you do it this way, you have to pay out of pocket. Then when you get your financial aid refund of any left over from your school you can pay yourself back. The only way to not have to pay for them is to buy them from the book store, they can charge your account for them

Q. I'm writing an essay for english in how Chris McCandless (Into The Wild) got everything from his parents but yet he sets out for a trip and seems to want to build a trip. Part of the assignment is to bring in another book that has the same mentality or the same topic as this. I was wondering if anyone knew any books that deal with an individual building a new life after he/she gets everything from his parents growing up.
