Aesthetic Realism is the philosophy founded by Eli Siegel (1902–1978) in 1941. It is based on three core principles. First, according to Siegel, the deepest desire of every person is to like the world on an honest or accurate basis. Second, the greatest danger for a person is to have contempt for the world and what is in it—contempt defined as the false importance or glory from the lessening of things not oneself. And third, it is the study of how what makes for beauty in art is a guide for a good life: "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves."

The philosophy is principally taught at the Aesthetic Realism Foundation, a non-profit educational foundation based in SoHo, New York City, through a variety of lectures, classes in poetry, anthropology, art, music, and individual consultations.

The Foundation faced controversy for its assertion that men changed from homosexuality through study of this philosophy, and in 1990 it formally stopped presenting this change. Some former students have said that Aesthetic Realism is a cult, but other former (and current) students say it is nothing of the kind.

What is your idea of an aestheticly perfect man/woman?
Q. Alright people, I'm gonna encourage a certain degree of shallowness on this one. Everyone always gives non-specific, wishy-washy answers. I'm not saying we should in our day-to-day lives base this kind of decision on purely shallow ideas, but seriously, everyone has to have their idea of the perfect man or woman. If you think Asians are hot, go with it! If you really like blondes, go with it! If you think unibrows are sexy, go with it! If you think blue hair is right, go with it! Put realism aside! This is what YOU personally think is the absolute aesthetic perfection in a woman/man. If you wanna go on to add perfect personality, job, and intrests, go ahead! C'mon folks, what is YOUR fantasy? I ll even offer up my own to get up started.… [cont.]

A. The perfectly gorgeous man would be between 5'10" and 6'4" tall, with broad shoulders, a runner's physique (no bulgy muscles, please), and a guitar player's hands and forearms. I don't care if he's blond, brunette or bald. Strong facial structure - even features. Eye color doesn't matter. Beautiful skin. Not overly hairy. The IDEAL man would be kind, funny, intelligent, ambitious within reason, and interested in many of the same things I am. The PERFECT man would be all of the above. And he wouldn't watch ESPN for more than 3 hours a week.

What are your opinions on idealism?
Q. To help familiarise you with the theory: "Idealism is the philosophical theory that maintains that the ultimate nature of reality is based on mind or ideas. It holds that the so-called external or "real world" is inseparable from mind, consciousness, or perception. In the philosophy of perception, idealism is contrasted with realism in which the external world is said to have a so-called absolute existence prior to, and independent of, knowledge and consciousness. Epistemological idealists (such as Kant), it is claimed, might insist that the only things which can be directly known for certain are just ideas (abstraction). In the philosophy of mind, idealism is contrasted with materialism, in which the ultimate nature of reality is based… [cont.]

A. To take pure idealism as a means of living or a factor of real life seems a bit naive in my opinion. Though being idealistic has negative connotations I do not think that any true philosopher would suggest much less of his or her own philosophical realism. Consequentialism provides the same sense of realism but in the sense that each action will have a reaction. Realizing the scope of that and in terms of both yourself and the society in which you live is the trick part. Utilitarian ideas are intriguing as well though they deal with the overall use of action in regards to how they effect groups of individuals as a whole.
