American pioneers are any of the people in American history who migrated west to join in settling and developing new areas. This especially refers to those who were going to settle any territory which had previously not been settled or developed by European or American society. The pioneer concept and ethos greatly predate the migration to parts of the United States now called Western, as many places now considered as East were also settled by pioneers from the coast. For example, Daniel Boone, a key figure in American pioneer history, settled in Kentucky, when that "Dark and Bloody Ground" was still undeveloped. One important development in the Western settlement was the Homestead Act, which provided formal legislation which regulated the settlement process. Poe, Hawthorne and to an extent Melville are the founders of the American Romanticism movement. Hawthorne in particular published several stories referred to as the Scientific Romantics which relate directly to the concept of science vs. nature. Q. why did the white men want american frontiers? even if they wanted the buffalo.. wat else did they use the land for? Asked by nobodycares - Thu May 3 20:13:35 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. They didn't want the buffalo...they wanted a homestead. the settled, populated areas of the country offered them only a job and a place to live. They wanted to OWN the land they worked, to be their own boss, to own the fruits of their labors. The cities were already congested, overcrowded. The newer immigrants, among them the German & Scandanavians had no experience in industries like the cities had avalable. Other people came to the frontier because they had heard stories that made the new lands sound like magical places. Some went to the frontier in order to prospect for gold, to hunt and trade fur pelts. All the reasons amounted to the same thing...a new start, in a new place with new opportunites.
