Where can I find a counted cross stitch alphabet?
Q. I'm looking for a backstitch (single line, not Xs) alphabet. I need one about 9-10 stitches high and if it was a little fancy (or at least not plain) it would be great. I've been searching on-line with no luck and even checked my local Hobby Lobby for one to buy with no result. Anyone know where I can find one? Or how I can make one with PCStitch 5? (I've only figured out how to make cross stitch alphabets with it, not backstitch ones.) Thanks in advance!
Asked by countinstitches - Thu Aug 10 20:12:49 2006 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. This one is only four stitches high, but I'd think you could double it fairly easily. That's what I usually do. Here's another one that's a little fancier: Get some graph paper and play around with altering the letters until you get what you want. Hope this helps!

Q. I know it's the largest alphabet, but how many letters does it have? Also, do you know what language, that is only 90 years old, is one of the world's youngest languages and is a blend of German, Dutch and other languages?

A. There's not a simple answer to your main question. As for the second question... Esperanto maybe? Some of its vocabulary is derived from Germanic languages, and it was first introduced in a book published 121 years ago. That's about 90 years ago. I think?

A. It is the lettter W. It even sounds like another letter. hint hint. alpha beta. alphabet. Greek. Those are the first two letters A and B. Even in Hebrew it is aleph, bet . And W looks like a double V not U. But I think that is because it was not in our original alphabet. The ancient Greeks did not have a U.

What alphabet do these languages belong to?
Q. I know there are 2 main phonetic alphabets: Roman [used in languages like English and Italian] and Cyrillic[used in Russian and Bulgarian, etc]. What about Portuguese, and French? I know they have characters like the Roman Alphabet, but they have different letters, like the "c". Is it still considered the roman alphabet?
Asked by Kate - Thu Oct 9 18:31:30 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, it's still considered part of the Roman script but with some adaptations. This, in fact, is the term used in the fantastic book "The World's Writing Systems" (eds.) Peter T. Daniels and William Bright. Many European languages use adaptations of the Roman script: Polish, Czech, Croatian. And many Central Asian languages use adaptions of the Cyrillic alphabet: Kazakh, Kirghiz, Tatar, etc. Hebrew has adaptations for Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish (Ladino), so too does Arabic for languages such as Persian, Urdu, Kashmiri, Kurdish.

Was the Thai alphabet really derived from the Sinhala alphabet?
Q. According to legend, King Ramkhamhaeng, The youngest son of King Si Inthratit, the first king of Thailand, modified the Sinhala (Sri Lankan) Script to create the Thai alphabet. The first written Thai language is inscribed on a stone known to Thais as the "Ramkhamhaeng stele". However, The Thai alphabet doesn't look like the Sinhala alphabet. Thai alphabet looks more like the Khmer (Cambodian) alphabet. Thai was once a part of the Khmer empire during King Ramkhamhaeng's time. Was the Thai alphabet derived from the Khmer or Sinhala alphabet?

A. "The Thai alphabet is derived from the Old Khmer script (Thai: , akchara khamen), which is a southern Brahmic style of writing called Vatteluttu. Vatteluttu was also commonly known as the Pallava script by scholars of Southeast Asian studies such as George Coedes." "According to tradition it was created in 1283 by King Ramkhamhaeng the Great (Thai: )." Is it ok for ESL Kindergarten students to learn the english alphabet before they learn their native alphabet?
Q. There's a private school I teach at and they don't show the alphabet in their own native language. I was told not show the alphabet in english because they say it would confuse the children and complications would come about later on, is this true?
Asked by N. B - Fri Dec 28 11:37:06 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Personally, I think they should be taught both. There's really not much difference between the two (only 4 additional letters in Spanish). The English alphabet is only marginally helpful to overall learning, though. When children learn the Spanish alphabet, they learn the pronunciation of all the letters in Spanish, which is much more helpful since it's a phonetic language. In English, children pretty much just learn the names of the letters. As far as causing complications later, it really shouldn't unless this is a systemic problem in which children are not being taught anything in their native language. That could cause a cultural disconnect which will cause confusion and could cause a crisis later in life. Hope this helps.

How many parents of preschoolers find teaching the alphabet difficult?
Q. I'm writing a newsletter for parents, and don't know if I should include a section on "Teaching the Alphabet." Is this something parents are pretty comfortable with, or should I give some insight on ways to make learning the alphabet more meaningful and fun?
Asked by MountainChick - Wed Aug 15 23:34:56 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think that your parents might find it very helpful (particularly those who aren't holding a full deck). The alphabet is not something that you learn in order, but OUT of order and that is not a commonly known thing. Be sure to put lots of different ways to learn the alphabet in your section (tactile, sensory, songs, stories 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom' is a good one). Congrats on having a good view of teaching and being willing to take the time and help out the 'homefront'.

A. I don't know, but I wanted to comment on that Wiki page. It's wrong for what she's looking for. If I understand the question right she is asking how many different ways can you do this: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxy z, acdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz b, adefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzb c...then "b" first all the way through "z." --- OK, I tried the formulas...(n!)/(k!(n-k)! ), where the number of k-combinations (each of size k) from a set S with n elements (size n). Both values equal 26. 26 letters and wanting to use all 26 letters each time...so (26!)/(26!(26-26)!) = 1. The answer can't be one. But the other formula could possibly be your answer where for the same values (26) you do the formula ((n+k-1)!)/(k!(n-1)!), where: ((26+26-1)!)/(26!(2 [cont.]

A. I would say if you are determined, you can learn in one week. You need to spend at least one hour every day. Master vowels on first day, and one group of consonants on every day thereafter. After that, start with reading simple texts, but keep at it by reading more complex Hindi books and Hindi on the internet. Hindi alphabet are very logically and phonetically arranged. There are lots of resources available on the internet. Search google and youtube for "hindi alphabet". Here is a good start: Practice typing in Hindi here:

Who first came up with the alphabet song and how did it get so popular so fast?
Q. I was just thinking today that it was pretty slick to put the alphabet to such a catchy tune. I wonder if it was a mom or dad or teacher, or what. It is amazing to me that almost every parent in the states sings the abc song to their kids to help them learn it. My husband comes from another country, and they don't sing their alphabet. In fact, he thought it was odd when I first sang it to our baby.

A. Here you have the story of the Alphabet Song, taken from The alphabet song was first copyrighted in 1835 by the Boston-based music publisher Charles Bradlee, and given the title "The A.B.C., a German air with variations for the flute with an easy accompaniment for the piano forte". The musical arrangement was attributed to Louis Le Maire (sometimes Lemaire), an 18th century composer. This was "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1835, by C. Bradlee, in the clerk's office of the District Court of Massachusetts", according to the Newberry Library [1], which also says, "The theme is that used by Mozart for his piano variations, Ah, vous dirai-je, maman."[2] This tune is more commonly recognizable as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little… [cont.]

How did the Romans adopt the Greek alphabet?
Q. Was the Greek alphabet (altered Phoenician alphabet) adopted by the Romans by force, through trade, or by some other means?
Asked by Jim - Mon Jan 19 01:03:22 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Ancient Romans (those who first started the Roman Empire) lived in southern Italy, around where Rome is today. This part of the Italian peninsula probably did a lot of trading and fighting with its neighbor, the Greek islands. Through this interaction, cultural exchanges were made; one of which was the Cumea alphabet (a variety of the Greek alphabet). The Romans and the Greeks then became two very distinct nations, and as such, their alphabets evolved differently, even though both started out the same. That's what I'm getting via Wikipedia, but I'm not an expert in this matter. If anyone knows anything more (or different), feel free to correct me.

A. If you have Microsoft Word, you can: -- use the WordArt feature to "fill" each letter with a picture, but it won't let you fill a letter with more than one picture. -- draw several smaller geometric and/or freeform shapes that you arrange to form a larger letter (such as a D), and fill each shape with a picture. -- garfield-n-odie Microsoft MVP 2005-2008
