What do you think of Louisa May Alcott?
Q. In your opinion why do you think Louisa May Alcott is one of the Great American Authors?
Asked by usasftbll - Thu Feb 19 21:38:27 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Louisa May Alcott has been my favorite writer for many years now. I think the reason she is one of the greatest American Authors is her stories simply relate to all people. She wrote about her life and her simple, ordinary philosophies and basically told a story about the characters. I think almost everyone will find themselves in these characters because they're dynamic and realistic.

Why is Louisa May Alcott an important person in history?
Q. I know it sounds like I'm getting you to do my homework. But honestly, I'm not sure what to write. All I know, more or less, is that she came from a transcendental family, she served as a civil war nurse and then became a writer. I'm sure others in history have a similar background or have done either/both things. What exactly did she do that was so extraodinary and had an impact on society?

A. Food for thought- In order to understand Louisa May Alcott's importance in History, you have got to reflect the period that she lived in. I think you are looking at her accomplishments from the perspective of a person living in 2009. What she is most famous for is her book "Little Women". That in and of itself, may not seem important, but this book is a classic. Which is extraordinary for a women living in the time that she lived where women did not have the right to vote and were considered property even in countries that considered themselves civilized. Today, many females may have become writers, but back then, this was quite a feat. Many females even had to resort to using male pen names to get published.

"Under the Lilacs" by Louisa May Alcott and it is copyrighted in 1878. How much is it worth?
Q. My husband's step-grandmother was an english professor and gave him this book when he was a little boy and it doesn't have much sentimental value to him. I was wondering if anyone knew how much it might be worth or how to go about finding out. Thank you!
Asked by Kristi K - Fri Apr 24 14:11:52 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You need to find out if it's first edition or not as first editions are generally worth a lot more than later reprinted versions. The details of that should be somewhere on the inside cover or on the pages after that. If you can't find it then take it to a book dealer, you should take it to one anyway as they will be able to tell you all you need to know about the book and how much it's worth.

What is the main conflict in the book Little Woman by Louisa May Alcott?
Q. Please help! What was the cause of the main conflict? How did the setting impact on the action in the story?
Asked by Helloo.. (: - Tue May 19 05:23:40 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There were several conflicts within the book: lack of money, Beth's illness, their father being away in the Civil War, and the girls trying to fix their flaws as they get older. The setting was a northern city during the Civil War, so you hear a lot about the war and how the girls want to try to help out or wish their father was home. One time the setting was important was when Jo sold her hair to get money so that her mother could get to Washington, DC in order to help their father, who was very sick. The people gave her the money even though her hair wasn't in fashion simply because they heard the story and hoped that if their son was ever sick, they could go to him.

What are your thoughts on the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott?
Q. Who is your favorite charcter?
Asked by pimp - Thu Mar 19 19:51:38 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I love Jo because I can relate to her. The Little Women was slightly boring in my opinion but it may have been because i was still in elementary school; fifth grade. But now that i think back on it, i believe I would like to reread it. The only thing that bothers me is the language style since it's a very old classic. If you enjoyed that book, try Jo's Boys or Rose in Bloom.

Why did Louisa May Alcott serve as a nurse?
Q. i know she served as a Nurse during the civil war but why? what were her thoughts about the Civil war?
Asked by Kellz - Wed Oct 22 18:20:02 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'm not sure what her thoughts were, but in those days the only jobs women could really get were as being a nurse or a teacher. I'm can guess because she was like the mother in Little Women and wanted to help the wounded battlefield soldiers who really needed help. Her thoughts were probably that it was ugly, but necessary to at least defend the Union, and probably for a good cause.

A. It's a very, very long time since I read the books, but as far as I can remember, although it is about the same set of characters, they are older and I think the story can be read on its own. I don't think it's essential to have read 'Eight Cousins' first.

A. Her A. M. Barnard work is just as good as her other tittles. This is the blood and thunder collection so "dangerous for little minds" that Alcott mentions in her novel 'Little Women'. Look for 'Pauline's Passion and Punishment' or 'Behind a Mask' However I prefer a less well known author from that era, Charlotte Perkins Gilman. 'The Yellow Wallpaper' tells a frightening story on the treatment of women based on her own life. I know Gilman used Alcott's work as the basis of a story. Gilman had a series of stories in which she imitated the style of well-known authors like Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James, Edgar Allan Poe, and Mark Twain. I don't know if they ever met but they were both originally from New England. The… [cont.]
