Term Paper: Charlotte Bronte or Louisa May Alcott?
Q. I have to decide whether to research my term paper on Charlotte Bronte or Louisa May Alcott. They're both amazing authors, but I'm not TOO familiar with their works. In your opinion, whose works are more interesting and why? Are there any authors you would rather choose?

A. Charlotte Bronte. Many argue that Jane Eyre was a protofeminist and the relationship between her and Rochester is deeply complex. You can also examine the entire Gothic genre and the influence of Victorian romanticism. LA Alcott's works are charming, but they lack the depth of Bronte's creations. George Eliot was a phemomenal Victorian woman writer who wrote about how people actually were. Her thinking, feeling characters are amazing creations, especially if you're into Victorian women writers.

Why is Louisa May Alcott an important person in history?
Q. I know it sounds like I'm getting you to do my homework. But honestly, I'm not sure what to write. All I know, more or less, is that she came from a transcendental family, she served as a civil war nurse and then became a writer. I'm sure others in history have a similar background or have done either/both things. What exactly did she do that was so extraodinary and had an impact on society?

A. Food for thought- In order to understand Louisa May Alcott's importance in History, you have got to reflect the period that she lived in. I think you are looking at her accomplishments from the perspective of a person living in 2009. What she is most famous for is her book "Little Women". That in and of itself, may not seem important, but this book is a classic. Which is extraordinary for a women living in the time that she lived where women did not have the right to vote and were considered property even in countries that considered themselves civilized. Today, many females may have become writers, but back then, this was quite a feat. Many females even had to resort to using male pen names to get published.

Need help with the book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, Questions on details?
Q. What is the first name of the four sisters father? When did the Civil War end? When Josephine won the contest for her book did they know that it was a girl writing it. How many children did Laurie and Amy have? What was the name of the Hummel Child that died of scarlet fever?

A. According to Wikipedia, Mr. March's first name is Robert. I don't actually remember that, myself, but it makes sense. In Little Men, Jo has two sons; the second is named Teddy after Laurie, the first is named Rob (presumably after Jo's father). Historically, the Civil War ended in April 1865. I would think they did know she was a girl, because they sent her a check which she would have to be able to cash (so it would have been made out to her). See Laurie and Amy had one daughter, Bess (from Little Men). I don't recall the baby Hummel being named. You can check - which is where Beth talks about the baby dying.
