How the activity series of metals is used to determine whether or not a single-replacement reacion will occur?
Q. How the activity series of metals is used to determine whether or not a single-replacement reacion will occur?

A. Cu + FeSO4 (aq) ===> no reaction look at the activity series and think of it as a popularity list. The ones at the top are more popular than the ones at the bottom. In this case, the Fe is more attractive than the Cu and will not give up its partner. However... Mg+ ZnCl2 ===> MgCl2 + Zn This is because Mg is more popular or active and it will react with the Cl2. The poor Zn is left alone and lonley.

What kind of activity can I do to teach a human biology class about human attraction?
Q. It is for high school students, and I need to teach them using a fun-ish activity about what makes us attractive to the opposite sex.
Asked by RandomChick - Wed Apr 15 00:38:19 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hmm. You might be able to collect a bunch of photos of attractive and unattractive people (across many racial backgrounds) and have the students categorize them and measure the photos to determine the actual components of visual attraction (symmetry, facial proportions, etc). The beauty (no pun intended) of this sort of activity is that humans across all cultures share a basic love of symmetry, and facial/body proportions usually hold well across cultures.

A. Okay -- fantastic questions which falls into two of my levels of expertise: music and cognition. The difference between a rank amateur and a professional pianist -- and they've actually done studies on this -- is a matter of neurological conditioning. The amateur has to translate the notes on the bass and treble clefs to what it means in terms of a key on the keyboard, accounting for rhythm and tempo, while the professional pianist does several things differently: First, the note on the sheet is directly translated to a physical movement for the specified period of time. How do I find out about police activity in our area?
Q. We have a helicopter flying way way too low around our town. It does not look like a police helicopter but they are definitely looking for something/someone. I called the sheriff and they said there is no activity in the area. Are there other agencies we should check with - anyone have any ideas? Where can I lookup official activity?
Asked by Lisa L - Tue Jun 19 13:32:57 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are many things it could be. The county will hire them to do large area surveys. Private developers use them to map out tracks of land for possible later development. The power companies use them to inspect power lines. Some areas use them to spray for mosquito's or to drop rabies pellets. The list goes on. If you are really that concerned, call the closest airport. Who ever it is will have had to file a flight plan and would be tracked on their radar.

What is a quick activity to demonstrate natural selection to a HS biology class?
Q. Hi, I am doing the field experience for my methods of teaching science class this semester. This thursday, I have to teach a lesson on natural selection. I need some suggestions for a quick (5-10 minutes) activity that the students can do to demonstrate the process of NS.

Dump them all in together and mix in a shallow container like a 9x13 cake pan. Then have students choose a small number of M & M's maybe 3, as you pass the container around. After everyone has chosen, count the number of each color of M & M's again. There will be fewer of the red, blue and green but not so much the yellow and orange. The reason being that the yellow and orange were camoflauged by the candy corn. Thus the yellow and orange would be "naturally selected" because of their blending in with thier environment. What is a good social activity for my 15 year old sister to become involved in?
Q. She has just moved to a new area and is being home-schooled so has not got a lot of opportunities to make friends. We want to find something for her to do where she can have fun and make friends. The only problem is she cannot do any strenuous activity, such as netball as she had a spinal operation in March and still needs to take it easy. Any ideas would be great.
Asked by Violet - Sat Sep 16 09:06:50 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I am assuming that she is not involved in a church since you're asking this question. Hmmm. If she's 15, she could try a part-time job at a place, like a movie theater, where a lot of other people her age would be working and/or would come to. Another option would be to see if your local library sponsors reading groups for particular books. Last, check out the home-schooling scene in your new community. A lot of places have specific social events for home-schooled kids to all get together.

What are the stipulations for passive activity loss carryovers?
Q. My wife and I own several rental properties, however we make over $150k a year. All of our properties are operating at losses, but we are not currently able to deduct any of the losses because of our income. How do we go about carrying forward this passive activity loss tot he time when we sell the properties? How do I document this? I reported all of the losses on my taxes for this year. Do I just need to keep track of the non-deductible amounts? It is already itemized on my tax return. Thanks in advance.

A. Have everybody write something on a piece of paper that no one would know about them. i.e. I ran in the Boston marathon, I have 8 children, etc etc. Have everyone hand the papers into the front. If there are 8 people participating, have everyone write 1-8 on a piece of paper. One by one, read out the secrets and have everyone make their best guess as to whos secret it is. At the end, have everyone reveal their secret! It usually gets a lot of laughs, and reveals a slight sense of people's character!

What is a fun and educational childrens activity?
Q. I could really use some help here. I need to think of a 50 minute fun and educational program for children that focuses on one of these values: individuality, curiosity, having fun, love, teamwork, acceptance, good manners. If anyone can think of a fun and detailed children s activity I would appreciate it. this is for young underprivileged kids, ranging from first grade to fifth grade.

A. Board games like Trivial Pursuit, and Scrabble can be fun. Have a old fashioned "games party", each person bring a game that doesn't use electricity or batteries, and see what happens. Children can work in pairs, against another pair, with winners having most points as a "team effort". Chess and Checkers are old favorites too. Problem with many of the Electronic TV games is that there often is NO human interaction, you play against a computer. That's no fun, lol. And, what adults present should strive for is teaching how to be a good loser, as well as a winner. Winners should be encouraged to shake hands with the loser. Some youth sports teams also encourage sportsmanship too.

Anyone have a good activity to teach children to compromise?
Q. I am running a social skills camp and am 1 activity short, the topic is compromise, the activity should be appropriate for 4-5 year olds. I really appreciate any ideas.
Asked by Jami J - Tue Jun 26 19:26:30 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Let the kids suggest group activities to do. Could be anything, coloring, a hike, swimming, play a game. Keep it to 4 or 5 ideas. Then promote discussion about which activity to do first. Be sure to use and explain the word compromise, and support their discussion as they figure out what to do. Example: you say, John and Mary want to color for a while but Jane, Joe, and Jeff want to swim, and Ellen wants to play ball. What can we do about this? They will argue a little, but you can support the discussion with comments like Oh, that's a good idea Mary. She said maybe we could color first, and then go swimming, and then tomorrow we will play ball. What do you think?...Ellen is disappointed? How can we compromise on this? Joe says… [cont.]

Reason was set apart from the natural world so that it might observe and know it, and the method of knowing, in turn, was itself key in shaping the world one knew. More completely than before, Enlightenment thinkers separated the natural world, which they could observe,… [cont.]
